Souvenirs As Ornaments

As my wife and I travel we always pick up a souvenir to place on our Christmas tree. This gives us a unique experience at Christmas. We can relive our travel experiences as we decorate. This unique souvenir collection mirrors our love of nature, travel, and wildlife.

This all started when I began receiving ornaments from my students. As I placed the ornament on the tree each year, it was nice to remember them and the experiences I had with each one.

Ornaments

My wife and I had started a spoon collection when we first were married. It got out of hand with so many spoons. People gave us spoons, but we did not connect the spoon with an experience and that ruined the whole idea of the collection. The spoons were all over the house and we stared hanging them on the walls. Yet, we did not enjoy them.

As we traveled I kept seeing ornaments and began to think how nice to use them on the Christmas tree to remember our visit to a national landmark, famous home, or special place. It was easy to convince my wife to work the ornaments into our vacation budget. It also meant that we no longer spent as much money on souvenirs. Rather than a t-shirt or knick-knack with no purpose, we knew exactly what we would do with our ornament.

Wildlife ornaments were also added to our collection since we love nature and walks in the woods. Placing a large mouth bass, a bald eagle, a mallard duck, or Canadian goose on the tree took us back to a camping experience or a special hike in a state park. These wildlife ornaments help us to plan ahead for our next vacation. We look forward to seeing different animals on our next vacation.

The joys of getting out our ornament collection and decorating our tree makes it a memorable experience. We look forward to decorating the tree rather than seeing it as a chore. We love to visit Presidents' homes and Frank Lloyd Wright creations. It's like doing it all over again as we place the Mount Vernon or Fallingwater ornament on the tree.
